Yes. There were two 9/11 that have changed the West World in last 20 years … The latter one is well known Twin Towers terrorist attack at New York on September 11th 2001.
But the first one, the absolute crushing event happened on November 9th, 1989. It was the day when citizens of Berlin started destroying the Berlin Wall. It was the end of cold war, it was the key point in our history…
Thank you, Timothy Garton Ash for your book “Free World” which reminded me that. Shame on us – we, the east Europeans, have let it be forgotten so fast.
The Germans don’t celebrate November 11th, but October 3rd, which is a public holiday, called “German Unity Day”. This year the German embassy in Warsaw has even issued a “thank you” note to the citizens of Poland for their contribution. It is sad that we are not able to thank them in return.
